This satellite facility
for the Atlantic Coast Athletic Club was completed in May 1994
in the ground level retail section of a newly constructed parking
garage. The 7,200 square foot club contains cardiovascular equipment,
circuit weight training, aerobics, lockers, and offices.
One challenge was to
incorporate the club's need for privacy within the predominantly
glass exterior that wraps the space on two sides. S/vS selected
a unique solution. Milk-white film partially blocks views into
the club, maintaining a sense of privacy to its members. Simultaneously,
activity within is visible from the commercial street outside,
adding pedestrian interest.
The locker and support facilities are contained behind a flowing
wall that doubles as a backdrop for the cardiovascular and circuit
areas. The finish is a result of spraying a light color over
a standard darker paint and troweling the top coat before it
sets. In contrast the smooth, warm wall at the aerobics studio
is made of standard maple veneer plywood cut into 32" x
46" panels and screwed to studs without splines or battens.
These durable, inexpensive finishes work well with the exposed
concrete T's of the garage above and contribute to the overall
dynamic of the space. |
