In early 2003 Nelson
County will have its own center that will provide much needed
services to residents of all ages. The Nelson Center will be
housed in the renovated building that was once Lovingston High
School and then Lovingston Elementary School. Built in 1931
during the Depression, it was closed in 1990 when Nelson County
consolidated its schools. It has remained abandoned for years
and it faced eventual demolition. Certified as a state historic
structure and recently named to the National Register of Historic
Places, the Lovingston's School continued existence is now assured.
Its facade, structure, and many of the finishes will remain.
A 4,500 square foot addition will be constructed to accommodate
additional program.
The Nelson Center partners are Jefferson Area Board for Aging
which will open a day care center, nursing clinic, and senior
center. Monticello Area Community Action Agency which will sponsor
the child care center, an outreach office, and a thrift shop.
Nelson County Community Development Foundation (NCCDF) which
promotes community development primarily through its involvement
in improving area housing and manages the county's recreation
program. The remainder of the space will be used by ARC of the
Piedmont and Lovingston Physical Therapy as well as other service
providers. |
